The morning air was crisp and fresh as the dappled mare walked across the grass layered in the morning dew. The sun had just risen a short while before and the world around her was still brightening up for the day. She had been avoiding these grounds for quite some time now since she left the herd she was born into a few years ago. She had been living life as a rogue, wondering the world. It may be the beautiful morning she awoken too, but something changed inside this little mares heart. She was ready to start looking for a new, permanent, place to call home.
Stopping momentarily to take a good look around it seemed as though the grounds were pretty much abandoned at the moment, all besides the birds that were starting to wake up and beginning to sing their sweet songs. She wasn’t sure if the lack of other equines was a good sign or not. Although it’s still very early in the morning it still seemed to her like there should at least be a few mares awaiting suitors here already. Usually she welcomed the peace and quiet, but with it being a new place & the first step towards a life changing event it was making her a little uneasy.
Her coat twitched and shivered as she took one last good look around before continuing farther into the grounds. She knew where she was going to await, she could see the spot she was going to claim for herself while she awaited suitors from the other side of the lands. Just ahead there was a large maple tree with low limbs that would provide an abundance of shade later in the day when the sun finished waking up and releasing it’s heat. And it was right off the river bank where the water was calm & tinted with a deep blue/green hue. It was perfect…

Eldon had scouted out the lay of the land, and now felt sure that he knew where everything was. Before he claimed a land, however, he wanted to be sure that he had at least one mare. He didn't want to anger anyone however, so when he heard that there were free to claim mares here, he just couldn't resist. I mean, really, who wouldn't jump at the idea of free mares with the small price of getting to know them? That worked both ways. Sure the mare got to know the suitor, but the male got to know the female.
He reached the meadow early in the morning, and was disappointed to see no one there. He was bout to turn and leave dejectedly, but then out of the corner of his eye, he spotted movement and spun towards it. Sure enough, it was a mare.
Eldon strode towards her, his stride long and purposeful, and just a bit prideful. He stopped not far from the mare, and greeted her thus, "Good morning, good lady, what's a pretty thing like yourself doing here?" He sure did pride himself on his flattering skills.

Mai didn't have to wait long it seemed despite the early hours, as apparently she wasn't the only early bird ready to make a life changing decision today. She had noticed the dark coated, silver tinted grulla stallion as soon as he entered the lands. Her ears perked towards the stallion while he studied the lands he was entereing. As he became closer it was apparent he still hadn't noticed her. She however couldn't help but notice HIM though. His breeding was similar to hers, although stockier and more purely lined. She herself was almost a perfect mixture of the stocky quarter breed and themore petite, ancient arabian breeds. The muscle tone this boy had was impressive...
Lost in her own thoughts she almost didn't notice the stallion, who still hadn't noticed her, nearly turn to leave. When she did though her ears flickered in uneasiness at how to react. She had been alone so long... but she did't want to seem desperate. Her unneasiness turned into weight shifting as she continued to decide what to do. Just let him leave and wait for another possible suitor to come along? I mean she had just gotten there a short time ago. Whinny softly to get his attention & hope she came off in a more welcoming manner than attention seeking? Or should she run after him like the desperate for a stallion mare she was beginning to feel like? All of these questions ran through the grey mares head in a matter of seconds, overwhelming her. She was a mare of quiet demeanor that always kept her thoughts & emotions under control. The scrambling mind sensation was not something her mind was used to. She shook her head, snorting softly, hoping to clear her mind back to normal.
Mai's ears pricked towards the sound of hooves, and there he goes, she thought. But as she looked up and seen that the handsome stallion was coming towards her and not away she couldn't help but feel a wave of relief wash over her. That's all it took, no deep thinking or planning required. Maybe if she hadn't have chosen a tree to stand under in the early hours and stand still as a statue he would have noticed her sooner. She had to admit, she was quite pleased she was going to have a chance to at least talk to the stallion. Her tail instinctively raised up behind her like a flag, as it always was when she was happy.
The stallion stopped just feet away from the gray maiden. Up close he was even more impressive. His voice was pleasing to the ears as well. She smiled softly at his question as she continued to take his presence in, "to simply figure out where I belong."

Eldon could see how pleased she was when he approached. Her tail rose like a banner behind her, it was as pretty as the rest of her. He stopped feet away and asked his beginning question. Her answer somewhat surprised him, as most mares would answer simply. He recovered quickly, however. Finally, a mare who would play along.
Now that he was this close to her, Eldon realized how small she was compared to him and he lowered his head a bit, so as not to seem threatening to her. That was the last thing he wanted her to feel.
His ears tipped forward as he continued the conversation. "My dear, where do you feel you should belong?" He wanted to hear every part of her answer so ears perked, strained towards her. It would be a pity if she had been shunned by another. She was far too pretty to have been scorned. But perhaps she had. Perhaps that stallion still held her heart. Or perhaps it had been the lands themselves to catch her. If it was lands, and she accepted him, he would try to claim them for her. He was not yet settled, so claiming a land wouldn’t be a problem.
(Sorry I had low muse for Eldon so he may not be quite himself in this post.)

Maiden could see that her response had shocked the stallion briefly. A small twerk of a smirk appeared for a brief moment in satisfaction. The attention she was receiving, however minor it was at the moment, was nice. Being courted... These lands... This was all new to her. But she had to admit that her first experience with it and this stallion was exciting. Was it going to go anywhere? No clue. But she suddenly felt eager to find out...
The little mare didn't feel threatened at all, but when she noticed him lower his head out of respect to assure that she didn't an actual smile appeared on her face. He showed signs of being a true gentlemen. She just hoped that it was his honest persona and not an actual 'show'. So far she was liking the stallion standing before her. It was her turn to be taken by surprise at his next question though. How did she respond to that? She wasn't sure where she belonged... That's why she was here. Coming up with the most clever retort she could muster she gave the stallion what was at least her attempt at a more flirtatious smirk - give the lady a break she's new at this - and replied, "Darling, if I knew that I would be there already."
She usually didn't even speak as much as she already had to the stallion in front of her, but she was willing to be a mare of at least a few more words than usual in order to get to know the current suitor that stood in front of her a little better. She allowed a softer, more serious expression overtake her face and she looked at the stallion sincerely, "my heart will know where I belong before I will."
Mushy? Yes. But you only live once. She was here to find a home, someone she could hopefully fall in love with and eventually build a family of her blood with. She was so tired of being lonely. She was ready to let her heart feel whole again. The mare had never been mistreated by another living equine, but she considered the loneliness she had let herself fall into as emotional self abuse. She had been depressed for far to long. She was ready to find that being that could help her learn to love herself again. She had no family of her own, she had no clue what became of her sire and dam after she left out on her own... it was just Mai. Always just Mai.
Mai batted her eyes softly at the stallion, snapping herself out of the depressing train of thought she had momentarily allowed herself into. Giving the stallion another soft smile she said gently, "I am Maiden. Or you may simply call me 'Mai'."

Her answer to his question pleased Eldon, who was somewhat relieved she didn’t have a land in mind yet. He responded to her flirty smile (At least that’s what he assumed it was) with one of his own. Then, in response to her flirty retorts, he asked, tenderly, "What about a jungle?" Mentioning the land, he hoped to claim. "One with brilliant red stones." For now, it was a simple wonder, he felt it too early to invoke the question yet. He was going to continue his gentle flirting with wonders of water lands, when the mare batted her eyes at him. He turned soft eyes on her and listened as she told her name. "Pleased to meet you Mai, I am Eldon." He found Maiden interesting, and Eldon had a desire to get to know her well. Since the mare had no idea where she wanted to live, Eldon decided to fess up. "Well Mai I may have no lands yet, but there is a reason, I promise you." He paused for a moment then continued, eyes on her, stopping if her face started to show a negative emotion. "I wished to have a friend to rule with me before I claimed a land. I do have a land in mind though." If her emotions allowed him to finish, Eldon would then stand still, watching her, waiting to see what her reaction would be.
