It is a vast and colorless wasteland—the ground underfoot powdered and thick with snow, stretching across to the horizon in a seemingly infinite and uncharted circle. The sky above is flat and white with the promise of a storm, snow clouds flushed and pregnant together as they hover to blur the skyline. The steppe is a globe, an illusion of time and space, warped in its perfection by the seamless distortion of earth and sky, and too easily playful with the mind’s eye.
Truly, it is beautiful.
Slowly, a dark dot grows larger as the huntress stalks forward, a distinct figure emerging from the speck seemingly out of nowhere, released like a germ across the pristine whiteness of the terrain. She has lain in wait, stone surfaces finally cracking from their frozen cocoon, her cold breath released like white smoke and whispering across the plains like a nimble, murky waif.
There is seemingly no source of real light as the soft brilliance highlights the sharp lines of the mare’s face, instead both rising from the snow and falling from the clouds to curve along the arch of her cheek bones, leaving her bright eyes shaded in shadow. From the darkness she peers, gaze narrowing slightly against the dry chill of winter, the velvet line of her lips pressing together with the promise of a scowl (their satin down far too soft for what black poison lies behind).
Suddenly there is a lake—a lake of glass, the only interruption of the white meadow’s seamless illusion into sky and space. With only a breath of pause, the spider mare shifts her path towards the blue crystal, glowing softly and still, the eye of the storm in the middle of this vast wasteland. She walks with deliberate steps, as though she has always belonged here—in the cold, in the frost, with the ice. A queen is not without her throne.
