Seeing that the stallions were occupied, Simplicity decided to venture out and explore on her own. Whatever nippiness of winter that there had been had disappeared, and in its stead were the lush signs of spring. Moisture…everywhere…drips of dew clinging to the flora of the tropical landscape, a denseness to the air, and puddles at every turn. A few blossoms had begun to open and new plants had sprouted. Her ears swiveled around, searching for sounds that would inspire investigation. A soft tinkling sound could be heard in the distance, so with no further adieu, Simplicity set off at a decent clip. Not long after beginning her hike, she glanced ahead and was met with the sight of solid rock. Her ears flicked back in annoyance and head cocked to the side as she considered her next move. There appeared to be a large boulder that stretched at least 10 feet above her, but surely it would only be but so wide. The tinkling noise had taken on more of a gurgling sound, recognizable as flowing water. It did not take long for Simplicity to decide that she would simply have to reroute to reach her destination. With a flick of her tail, she turned left and began picking her way through the dense underbrush, the stone a constant presence on her right side. This would be a terrible position if a pack of predators decided to come for me, she thought nervously, head low and ears attuned to the slightest noise.
Finally the rock to her right gave way to a sandy opening, and Simplicity turned to eagerly head off in that direction. The gurgling had gotten louder and splashing noises had become apparent as well. Not long after she began trotting on the sand she spotted the source of the flowing water. About 20 feet up was a crevice in the mountainside that had a steady stream of water flowing through and falling into a small pool below. The waterfall was small, but the distance the water fell to the ground allowed for a decent amount of noise. She licked her lips and realized that she actually was rather thirsty. She cautiously approached the edge of the pool, eyes darting every which way to check for predators. Growing up in the desert one learned that delightful watering holes did not come without their dangers. Seeing nothing to alarm her, her muscles relaxed. The sand squelched beneath her hooves as she stepped ever closer. Taking one last look around, Simplicity plunged her muzzle into the refreshingly cool water and drank deeply. Once she finished, she pawed the water gently and then jumped full into it, landing on all four feet. The water splashed up around her legs and belly but was shallow enough that she was in no danger of needing to swim. She lowered her head once more and swished the water around her lips, playing with the sparkling liquid. With little warning, she threw her head around and used her teeth to scratch her rump where a few droplets of water had tickled her. The sun was just beginning to peek out from behind the clouds and set up glittering reflection in the pool. It was more than she could resist, and soon she began parading about in the pool, tail flagged, head high, feet picked up nearly to her chest as she playfully slogged around in the water. Even though she was by no means used to having so much water available so often, she was beginning to enjoy it instead of fear it. She hoped that the stallions were nearly done with their conversation and at least one of them would be up for playing. If she was lucky, they might even follow her here. Wouldn’t they just love this giant puddle of fun? she thought to herself as she plunged her muzzle back in the clear fluid and sucked greedily.
