Axe My axe is my buddy, we both cry with the trees How long had it been since she had slept? The days and nights were all merging together within the young faes mind, creating a jumble of memories and thoughts that had yet to be filed or processed. It seemed to only take a second, just long enough to blink and the bright fiery orb was replaced by its colder silver sister. Did she pass out during these times or was he memory failing her horribly? She couldn’t have slept as she felt her body being weighed down as though pure lead was running through her veins. She couldn’t even feel her legs anymore as the thick thorns tore at her delicate skin but she could feel the heat of her blood trickling over her fetlocks. Where had this rough terrain come from? She was certain she had been in a beautiful, calming field before her most recent black out but this land seemed like some sort of deathly limbo. No grass grew for as far as the eye could see, only endless tangles of thorns creating narrow maze like paths. The thorns grew up the gnarled trunks of distorted trees, the bare blackened branches reaching toward the darkening sky, twigs like bony fingers clawing at the dome above. There was something strange about the sky as well. Instead of bright gay pastels painting the clouds the colours were faded, almost running into one indistinguishable gray that was quickly darkening.
As the light was drained from the earth the young fae could literally feel the walls of darkness creeping in upon her. Her previous weary amble turned into a choppy and stiff stagger as she tried in vein to follow the fading light which only left her alone in a dark world. Not a single star graced the sky though the full moon cast a feint light over the land. Harks flickered as she caught the sound of a twig snapping somewhere behind her. It took all her effort not to bolt blindly forward, knowing she wouldn’t get far before her tendons were torn to shreds. Another noise, that of a thorn branch being disturbed caused Axe to panic further, her stagger now a brisk trot, legs lifting high as her body contorted around the barbed plants seen so clearly in her mind and in turn sending phantom waves of pain washing through her body. Eldon grazed in the steppe. All was calm and silent, almost eerily silent. There was a noise then, a desperate whinny and his head shot up. There, some distance away was a mare. She was the one who had called. Was about to step towards her, but she disappeared before he could move. He shook his mane, and continued to graze; the dim of early evening could easily trick one’s brain. Another whinny sounded, and this time it was so close he could feel the outtake of her breath as he looked up. There, in front of him stood his first love. She was still the same pretty silver buckskin but she looked at him as if she was afraid. Behind her, he saw movement, and out of the growing dim came another figure. This one too he recognized as Breeze, his pretty leopard appaloosa. She too seemed afraid, though neither of him. He took a step forward to greet them, his ears pricked forward. "Breeze, Enchant! Your here!" But as he stepped forward, they took a step back. "It’s alright, it’s me, Eldon. You're safe with me." Then came the whispers. 'Follow.' And with that they turned and galloped towards the trees.
Eldon’s thoughts were in an uproar. The most prevalent said 'I mustn’t lose them' and so he chased them, followed them, not to be left alone. As he ran, he never seemed to get closer or farther away from the shadows he was following. That is until they reached a forest. The slowed to a trot, and Eldon managed to catch up with them some. But when he reached the forest, he knew why they had slowed, and so did he, also. But while they glided along, seemingly unhindered, Eldon’s legs were raked by cruel thorns.
Enchant and Breeze began to gain ground, leaving him behind, for Eldon had slowed from the pain. At this sight, however Eldon abandoned all care and bolted forward. If he could catch them before they disappeared... But thankfully for him they had stopped in a clearing and were facing him. Eldon slowed to a trot before entering the clearing and they were gone. Instead, on the other side of the clearing there was another mare. One he did not recognize, but she looked quite weak as she staggered through the thorns. Eldon seized his chance to forget about the strangeness, and cantered towards and around her so that he was blocking her path. "You are hurt. There is a clearing behind you where you can rest." It was a simple suggestion. For now.
