It had not taken long before Simplicity got bored with what she was doing, splashing around in the waterfall at Skull’s Earldom. Her hide was thoroughly soaked and dripping, her forelock plastered to her forehead. Looking to either side and seeing that neither Keska nor Booth were in near proximity, she heaved a sigh. It did not appear that either stallion was going to offer her companionship any time soon, so she was ready to venture back out to the claiming grounds and see who else she could find to interact with. She shook the water off with a full-body shake, her mane flapping wildly against her neck and her tail fluttering behind. The droplets sprang from her coat, glistening in the light as the sun shone down. She could hear birds calling to each other, singing sweetly, and the chatter of other creatures on the mountainside rang clear. It appeared that spring was in the air, and as such, all the creatures were abuzz with activity. It gave her a pang of loneliness that in the midst of such excitement, she was without a companion. She briskly trudged out of the small pool and headed west, back to the large meadow she had originally come from. As she weaved through the trees it became clearly evident that spring had sprung. The leaves looked fresh and green, flowers were blooming, and plants had sprouted in all directions. Given that she was traveling through a lush, more tropical environment, it was no surprise that raindrops clung to the leaves and branches from the morning’s rain. Periodically a droplet would fall down and splat on her back or rump, giving her a start. Cocking her ears back, she shook her head in dismay. When would she get used to the dripping of water?A snake slithered across the path in front of her, drawing the mare’s attention. Her dished face dipped low in curiosity, only to abruptly pull back when the snake sped quickly away, choosing to flee versus fight. With a snort, Simplicity stepped by where the snake had disappeared into the brush and continued on towards the meadow. She heard the river flowing not far from where she was. That is a good sign; I’m nearly there she thought excitedly. The scents of other mares and stallions mingled in the air as she inhaled deeply. The knowledge that she may once again soon be in the presence of other horses and potentially find a companion encouraged the bay Arabian to push forward with more gusto. She held her head up high, flagged her tail, and trotted energetically out from the cover of the trees and into the grassy clearing. As she entered the open field, her eyes nearly boggled out of her head. My, how this grass has grown! It had been a full season since she had last laid eyes on the grass and spring had ushered in an intense increase in height. Flowers dotted the meadow, insects busily working in and around the open blooms. Simplicity abruptly dropped her head and greedily ripped at the tall stems of the grass, chewing hungrily. The grazing kept her occupied, and she was utterly distracted from her mission of searching out others. Perhaps in time someone would come to her.

Midnight saw the bay mare, and he was drawn to her, her small ears and inquisitive eyes leading him in. Although she was a horse, and a mare at that, he had never seen anyone quite as pretty, or any horse with such a head as that. He was a stallion looking for that special mare, and he wondered if she could be the one. Now if he could just get his feelings under control for long enough to speak, he would let her know how he felt about her. There, he had it he turned to the mare, steadied his voice and spoke "My dear, what is your name?" instantly he felt doubtful, but he continued "Please do not think I'm trying to intrude, but you shine with beauty form the inside out, and I just wanted to say that," here he stopped to think for a minute and began again, "I have no land to offer, but I will not search alone. I have no other mares with me, so you could steal my throne. I'm sorry if this bothers you, I'm not trying to be mean. I know I'm just another stallion, but will you be my queen?" Midnight had always prided himself on his poetry.

The sweet grass tickled her nostrils, inducing a snort to clear her nasal passages. My is this tasty, she thought happily, her tail swishing at flies as she munched contentedly. An array of insects were busy in the meadow; bees were traveling from flower to flower, beetles wound through the blades of grass, butterflies floated on a gentle breeze. Her ears swiveled as she heard a cadence of hoofbeats that were unfamiliar to her. The steps approached slowly, and she heard as the stallion drew breath to speak. Surprised from her meal, the Arabian mare's dished head shot up and looked at this stranger. Her gaze swept over his dark coat, flowing mane, and muscled body as he spoke to her. Whoa, he sure gets to the point, she mused to herself as he finished his rhyming request. Pawing lightly at the ground with a dainty foreleg, she gave his question some thought. She stretched her velvety muzzle toward the stallion and whuffed softly as she inhaled his scent. That is a most intriguing proposition. My name is Simplicity; what is yours?
Although she was keen on finding companionship and protection from a stallion, she was curious to find out more about this fellow before she followed him from the meadow. He spoke of searching out new lands, and she certainly loved exploring and adventure. Her muscles quivered in anticipation of another journey. Simplicity took a few steps around to the side of the Friesian, eyeing him inquisitively. He appeared strong and sturdy but young, like her. After mulling his words over further in her mind, she decided that he was simply being playful and charming. A young stallion like him surely wouldn't just settle into a longterm relationship upon just meeting someone. Nevertheless, she was flattered by his words and preened, arching her neck and eyeing him coyly. Queen, eh? I am honored you think me so special. Her coat glinted in the sun, a few dark patches of sweat appearing as the moist heat from the field enveloped her. Having grown up in an arid desert environment, the lush, humid lands here were certainly a change for her. She swung her head, flipping her forelock and then gazed steadily at the stallion, awaiting his response and assessing his body language. It appeared that things were about to get interesting, and she was eager to see what the future had in store.

"My name is Midnight, and I have found a place, actually a position, as second in command over the Mount Viridian territory." Midnight said while slowly looking around. Seeing no other stallions, he continued, "I think you so special because, here he stopped again to think through his words. "Well, when I first saw your eyes, I say on the inside curiosity, and patience. It also caught my eye that you were not looking for stallions. Instead, you were just calmly grazing, waiting for one to find you. Your true beauty comes not from the outside, in that sense you are good tis true. But your true beauty is found on the inside, and in that none is better than you. That is why I think you so special. I must go now, and take on my new position. But if you will accept my offer, please come to the mountain and make yourself known, do this and I will find you a throne.

Her ears twitched as she listened to the flattering compliments. She had never psychoanalyzed herself, but she was not a vain or conceited individual and had never considered herself beautiful. She was inquisitive, sure, and independent and playful definitely, but beautiful? Well, if he said so it must be true. Arching her neck, she bobbed her head in agreement as she drank in his words. Just as suddenly as he had appeared, the stallion was off again, his dark frame silhouetted against the sinking sun.
He had mentioned his destination as Mount Veridian, a place she had never heard of before. As she watched the Friesian step off towards his homelands, she found it curious that he headed in the direction from whence she had just come. Intrigued, she pondered if this new territory was located near the one she had just left. If so, there would be plenty of foliage, moisture, and--oh how her mouth watered just thinking about it--berries! She never had tasted the delightful berries of Skull’s Earldom, but she sure was interested. Cocking her head to the side, she watched as the stallion faded from view. Once he was out of sight, she began to follow, only to lay back her ears and pause, turning back to the meadow and its lush grasses. Surely she shouldn’t just follow smooth-talking strangers on a whim, but then again, she was bored, lonely, and itching for excitement. Her head plunged down to the carpet of green, and she snatched several mouthfuls of grass before drawing her head back up and munching thoughtfully. Food always helped her think better (when it wasn’t distracting of course), and she certainly had a lot to think about. To go or not to go, that was the question.
Okay, fine, I’ll go, she told herself, reaching over for another bite. It’s not like I have any other propositions to consider at the moment and adventure and companionship would do me good. She grazed only a short while longer before taking a deep breath and springing into action. She settled into a flowing trot and covered the ground at a decent clip, following the stallion’s scent towards this new land. She could only hope that she would find what she was looking for.
