Simplicity wound her way through the trees, following the scent of the dark stallion as she made her way to the new lands of Mount Veridian. The landscape had changed from tall, waving grasses to lush bushes and tropical trees. The little bay mare kept her eyes peeled for predators, keenly aware that she was traveling alone and would be a prime target. Giving a snort, she picked up the pace, settling into a quick jog through the humid forest. Dark patches of sweat spread over her flanks and a slight lather was forming on her neck as she continued deeper into the trees. The heat of summer didn’t bother her, but the humidity was another thing. She felt like she was breathing water, the air was so thick with moisture.
She had journeyed for several hours before she found herself stumbling across a clearing. The sun had nearly set and dusk had fallen. The critters that had been chattering and singing quieted as night began to fall. Simplicity felt very exposed as she approached the clearing and feared that perhaps she should seek a more secluded place to spend the night better protected from potential predators. She glanced nervously around, her ears flicking back uncertainly. Across the clearing she spotted a rocky outcropping that had a covering of trees. She gave a hesitant snort then broke into a fast trot that brought her quickly to the spot she planned to spend the night. As fired up as she was with nerves, the Arabian found it challenging to settle into a peaceful slumber. She would awaken with a start at the slightest noise, shift her weight uneasily, then resume a fitful sleep.
Finally dawn broke and the darkness of night began to lift. Simplicity was utterly exhausted from her restless night and stood quietly by the outcropping, head hanging low and ears splayed sideways. Her eyes looked around dully, nearly glazed over, as she sought out signs of activity from the herd that must inhabit these lands. Midnight said he was headed this way to join others, so they must be around here somewhere, she mused. Though to be honest, I’m too wiped to bother searching right now. Try as she might, the petite, young mare’s eyelids began to droop lower and lower until she fell into a deep sleep, standing in the cover of the trees. Her lower lip hung as her body relaxed, and she was oblivious to the world as her body rested. Perhaps the herd would stumble across her as she napped, providing a source of companionship to a travel-weary newcomer.

As Midnight loped across the land, he wondered if she had come. Had the beautiful mare Simplicity come too see his home? He hoped for her, but he would not know unless he found her. Taking a deep breath of the new air, his nostrils quivered as he scented something out of place, the scent of a mare. Turning his head, he followed the scent, hoping it was her. As he pushed through the branches, and came to a clearing, his heart skipped a beat. It was her! She had come, and was sound asleep. Nuzzling her gently, his voice took up a soft whisper. "Wake up princess, I know of a spot where you will sleep much better." checking over his shoulder to make sure she was following, he set out towards his special spot, a spot he has come across a few hours ago. When they reached the small glade ringed with birches, he sank down onto the soft moss."We have arrived"

She had been soundly dozing and did not hear the stallion approach. As such, she startled when a soft, velvety nose nudged her. Throwing her head up and eyes wide, she looked around for signs of danger. Discovering that it was Midnight, her eyes softened as she recognized the stud. It had not taken him long at all to make his presence known to her after arriving at his territory. She was pleased that she would be lonely no longer. Whuffing her acknowledgement of his suggestion, she lowered her dished face and began to plod along behind him. It was unlike her to tread so heavily given that she was a typically hot-blooded sort, but she was utterly tired. A poor night’s sleep can do that.Their journey to the glade took a short while, and she was content to amble along behind the Friesian. Birds called out from the trees and assorted critters scurried through the underbrush. She eyed a brightly colored bird curiously as it warbled and flitted from branch to branch. She wondered about where they were headed and what Midnight had in mind for the near future. As they reached the cool glade, Simplicity heaved a sigh of relief. She was encouraged by the stallion to enter the mossy bed but was wary of the sinking sensation as her hooves touched the spongy ground cover. She shied back, hesitant to tread on it again but eager to reach the security of the secluded area. Laying her ears back, she gathered her wits and made a flying leap deep into the heart of the space, landing squarely. She remained frozen in place, her legs outspread, as she assessed the situation. Surely there are no sink holes in this place; Midnight would not have led me that astray I hope she thought anxiously. She tossed her head, trying to regain confidence, and then walked gingerly to where the stallion lay. She was too nervous to lay down, her senses on high alert and her mind cautioning her to stay at the ready on all fours. She looked to the stallion for reassurance as she asked, So, what else dwells in these parts? Anything scary? Are there other mares here too? Before she considered making this place home, she wanted to be sure of the politics of the herd and safety of the surroundings. Nothing in life can be certain, but one can certainly take precautions for their wellbeing.Simplicity // 5 years old // Arabian // Mare // Bay // 15hh // Homeless

"There is not much else in these parts. I haven't seen anything scary, but you never know." Midnight was tired, trying to put sense into his answer. "There are no other mares in this territory, but any could come at any time. Right now the only creatures that I know are here are you, me and Rhett, the lead stallion.

The cool breeze swept her mane up from her arched neck, toying with the silky strands. Fall was now upon them, and as such, she was officially another year older. Simplicity was still a sprightly Arabian mare, but with another year under her belt she was certainly much wiser than before. Who would have thought that a desert creature such as herself would find a home in the humid, tropical land of Mount Veridian...that is if the lead stallion accepted her. She glanced back at the dark stallion and pondered his words. He had been clear from the start that he was not the ruler of this territory, and yet he was still content to lure her back with him. Did the lead stallion even know she was here? Was a fight brewing between the two or were they fast friends? The dynamic puzzled her but she gave a shake and cleared her mind. Whatever was going on between the two stallions was not her business to worry about. Whuffing gently, she folded her legs neatly and lowered herself to the bed of moss below. Is there anything I ought to know about this Rhett? Will he allow me to stay? she inquired, watching Midnight closely. Before she got too comfortable, she’d have to flesh out her situation. The birds were singing gaily in the surrounding trees, enjoying the good weather as the seasons only changed mildly in such a tropical place. Simplicity flicked an ear back to listen to the chatter and noises while she awaited a response. Birds were so active and fun, she nearly wished that she could just pick up and float around in the air, joyfully calling out. Then again, she did enjoy a good nap too, and once their conversation ended, a nap is what she intended to take.Simplicity // 6 years old // Arabian // Mare // Bay // 15hh // Homeless...or not?

"Rhett is a very kind stallion. I have already asked him, and he seems eager that a mare would want to stay in his territory, so there should be not trouble with you being here. As for whether you should know anything about Rhett, he is the laeder of the herd, and I think he will be a good leader, one who is kind bvut firm, the type of horse that one would want to follow. I personally think that he is very kind, letting me into his herd even after I challenged him, as well as letting me take responsibility for some of the smaller decisions by myself. He has said that he just wants the final say for the big decisions. I think that he is a great horse who will make a great leader" Having said all this, Midnight laid down, wanting to give Simplicity time to think about what he just said.

The stallion’s words soothed her fears. The lead stallion sounded like a horse of good character, and Simplicity considered herself lucky to have found herself in a territory with not one, but two males who could provide protection and companionship. She flicked her tail in contemplation...there did not appear to be any downside to residing here; lots of lush forage, companions, no predators (at least, none that she had noticed yet). The scenario almost seemed too good to be true. Simplicity gave a nod as she spoke with finality, I do believe I will stay here then. With her decision made, the bay Arabian felt a weight lift from her and exuberance bubbled up inside her once more--she had a home! Homeless no longer, she could consider herself a member of the Mount Veridian herd. She wondered how long it would be until other mares joined the group. On the one hand, it was nice to have a stallion’s full attention, but she was accustomed to bands of mares interacting with one another as foals played nearby. She longed for the hustle and bustle of an active herd. All in good time, she consoled herself. With a soft sigh, she lowered her head to the mossy bed and allowed herself to rest. With the seasons changing, she was certain that other changes were in store and wanted to be well rested in preparation. As she sank into deeper sleep, her ears lay sideways and her lower lip hung loosely. Her breathing slowed and the breaths grew deeper. Whatever would her next adventure be?Simplicity // 6 years old // Arabian // Mare // Bay // 15hh // Mount Veridian
